Loc: Las Vegas When I got the Maxima over 2 years ago, a few months after the CV boot ripped. The grease started leaking out, was splashing all over the fender well. Then a couple of weeks later that side axle started clicking under hard acceleration in 1st-2nd gear. I ignored it and it went away. 20k miles later that boot is still ripped, no more grease (cause it all dried up), axle doesn't make any noise. At some point I bought both new axles with CV joints and boots, but I've been too lazy to replace it since it didn't cause any problems.

So what's the problem? Any bad side effects to driving like this? Recently I changed the brake pads/rotors on the car, and that side (passenger) was down to the metal, the driver's side front had a little bit more life left in it. Is that related? _________________________

Posts: 28723 I'm surprised that it has lasted that long. I wouldn't have thought one to go that long with most of the grease thrown out.

That makes me feel better about my Dakota though, I need to replace(wallet mechanic) the drivers side front CV axle and have been putting it off. _________________________

Loc: Peoples Republic of Maryland Sooner or later its going to fail and leave you stranded. If your ok with that drive it till it breaks and get it towed home to repair it. When a FWD car breaks an axle you get zero power to the ground, you can't even move an inch. That is unless you have a clutch front diff, but drive it for more than a few feet and you'll burn up the clutches in the trans.

Huh?

If it is run without grease the bearings will burn up and break into a brazillion little pieces. From there either they will fall out or lock the axle up.

Posts: 1449 I had a 626 that I drove like that for a winter, it made pretty nasty cracking/thumping noises when it turned. Since I bought the car for $150 I didn't really care, but if it's a daily and you depend on it you should probably fix it.

Loc: Peoples Republic of Maryland Anyone know where to buy the bands and tool to reseal the boot clamp? I have a mix and match of axle parts and would like to start taking broken parts and making good axles out of them.

Loc: 7426 Hubbard Avenue, Middleton... Bands and boots I would imagine you could get at an auto parts store. My buddy is a mechanic and he got the tool to seal the clamp from Snap On. He has no complaints and they were actually reasonably price. I think this is the tool or something close to it that he got. _________________________

Posts: 28723 I'm going to have to get some of those bands. I'd had the boot replaced on mine and at first the boot slipped off the hub, he fixed that saying that he hadn't tightened the band enough.

Then the little end around the axle, that band slipped off. The grease blew out. Would the axle have to be dissasembled to repack it with grease? Can I just pull the boot down the axle and put in the grease the best I can? _________________________

Loc: Augusta, GA IIRC you just slide the boot down and fill it up with the grease. I don't think it has to be packed or anything like you do with say wheel bearings.

I doubt it's SFI approved, but I use the giant hose clamps.
it makes it easy to fix/replace when needed.
and the clamp thing... clears the transmission, easily. _________________________
